| ACADEMICS
|
St. Joseph School offers a strong academic curriculum for grades Pre K3 through 8th. Our curriculum follows the guidelines set by New York State as well as those set by the Archdiocese of New York.
Our students are taught in a stimulating, nurturing, and safe environment. All students receive individual attention to help them reach their highest potential. In addition to the core curriculum of Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Religion, and Science, St. Joseph’s curriculum includes Computer, Library, Art, Physical Education, and Music.
St. Joseph School believes that literacy is central to academic achievement. The school employs a literacy consultant from the Cooke Center for Learning and Development to mentor our teachers. The specialist works with our teachers to group students by literacy level and in creating classroom libraries for each reading level. Through this program we have acquired leveled reading texts, books on tape, and “word walls” all of which make our curriculum interactive and multidimensional.
We also have instated a “Book of the Month” tradition in which the entire school reads the same book. One month we read Leo Lionni’s Matthew’s Dream, and in another we read Nikki Grimes’ Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope.
St. Joseph School works to ensure that its students master age appropriate technology skills. Our technology consultant helps teachers incorporate technology into the curriculum in every grade and in almost every subject.
